What matters to us
CUB stands up to utility companies and their shareholders. Through our advocacy before state regulators and the Minnesota Legislature, and by speaking directly to the public, we fight for transparency, accountability, and fairness between utilities and Minnesotans.
Our Work
Fighting the use of ratepayer funds for excessive corporate profits
Investor-owned utilities are entitled to a fair return on their investments, but utilities have long been awarded unreasonably high returns – paid for by ratepayers. CUB seeks to reduce excessive utility profits. We also press for public disclosure of utility spending, which enables us to advocate against the use of ratepayer funds to enrich utility executives or engage in political and lobbying activities that work against the interests of Minnesotans.
Blocking charges for wasteful spending
Utilities should not be allowed to charge customers for their mistakes. CUB has successfully advocated to prohibit utilities from charging passing on the costs of accidents, poor decisions, and their lack of due diligence, saving Minnesotans millions of dollars.
Bringing public attention to unfair costs, profits, and business practices
CUB brings attention to important and complex utility issues that affect Minnesotans. We seek to demystify complex topics and promote a better understanding of energy issues by the public and policy leaders.
Supporting more representative participation in utility decision making
CUB shares our time and knowledge with people and organizations who are underrepresented in decision making. We try to help people understand regulatory procedures, technical utility topics, and how to take advantage of compensation available to public interest intervenors with a financial need.
