Many homes in Minnesota have natural gas or propane water heaters. Replacing an aging unit with a new gas/propane unit will probably be the least expensive option in most situations. However, operating costs can be less for air source heat pump water heaters, especially compared with the cost of propane. Gas water heaters typically heat water faster than electric models, too.

Gas and propane water heaters have higher safety risks. Regular maintenance is important to ensure that the unit is working properly and not venting dangerous gases inside your home.
