About the Citizens Utility Board of Minnesota
The Citizens Utility Board of Minnesota (CUB) is a nonprofit advocate for our state’s utility consumers. We advocate for affordable utility service, consumer protections, and clean energy.
CUB aims to be a voice for Minnesotans at the state Public Utilities Commission and the legislature. We work for a rapid, cost-effective transition to clean energy that benefits the public – including communities that have long borne the negative impacts of our energy systems. We fight for affordable rates and stand up to utility companies and their shareholders.
CUB is also a resource for Minnesota consumers. Our expert staff advises hundreds of Minnesotans each year on their rights, resources, and responsibilities to avoid utility shutoffs or get service reconnected. CUB consultations help people reduce home energy expenses, figure out the best options for renewable energy, and provide answers to home energy-related questions. We share information and resources in partnership with communities and organizations throughout the state.
CUB’s role as a consumer advocate drives us to address historic and persistent inequities in energy systems. We seek to align power and resources equitably both within our organization and externally in the systems in which we advocate.
CUB is excited to announce we will be hosting an AmeriCorps member. Applications are being accepted now for an October start date.
The AmeriCorps member will support CUB’s outreach team across the state of Minnesota, sharing information about home energy options and helping consumers connect to resources that can help them save money, reduce energy use and stay comfortable in their homes.
The AmeriCorps member will have a special focus on helping consumers navigate opportunities to reduce their carbon impact and transition to more electric-powered and energy-efficient heating and cooling systems and appliances.
Examples of work include:
- Conducting research and developing consumer resources and tools to help households plan for electrification
- Giving educational presentations
- Connecting households who are struggling to pay bills with resources and helping them understand their options and rights
- Responding to consumer inquiries via telephone and email
- Tabling at community events
- Supporting outreach staff in developing and maintaining community and organizational partnerships
Our ideal AmeriCorps member has a dedication to equity, a sincere interest in helping people, and a strong curiosity about energy and the clean energy transition, in particular. They should have strong communication and interpersonal skills as well as interest in and respect for the communities in which we serve. Someone who is team-oriented, flexible, and creative in their approach to our work serving Minnesota consumers will thrive in this role.
